The Janet Christiansen Abaroa Pioneer Scholarship is given in memory of a much beloved alumnus who has left a legacy of exemplary conduct, contributed to University institutions and blazed a path for other students to follow. Pioneers are characterized for their leadership and dedication. As a member of the inaugural women's soccer team in 1998, Janet proved that she is indeed a pioneer. She lead her team to back-to-back National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) Championship victories in '09 and '00 and received post-season honors as a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Academic All-American in '01 and '02.

This scholarship will recognize one female soccer athlete who displays academic excellence, athletic success and service to the University. This scholarship will be awarded during Southern Virginia University's annual awards recognition assembly, held in April of each academic year. Recipients must be returning to the University for the following academic year and will receive their scholarship divided equally between the fall and winter semesters.

Be in good academic standing as demonstrated by maintaining a 3.5 GPA or better and having already earned at least 24 credits;
Be a member of the varsity women's soccer team who displays team leadership, dedication and achievement;
Be committed to complete their education at SVU;

The SVU Head Women's Soccer Coach must nominate candidates by April 1 of each year
A Selection Committee will be established to review all nominations and will select the scholarship recipient.

The scholarship awarded will be good for one academic year. An individual may be nominated and receive the scholarship more than once, for up to eight semesters (or the equivalent); however, there will only be one recipient each year.
While it is not a requirement in any way for the awarding or continuation of this scholarship, recipients will be encouraged to voluntarily make donations to replenish the Janet Christiansen Abaroa Pioneer Scholarship when , and if their financial circumstances permit. Any funds received to replenish the Scholarship will be added to the principal of the scholarship for continues awards to qualified nominees.

To contribute to this scholarship, checks should be made out to Southern Virginia University, with a notation that the gift is in memory of Janet Christiansen Abaroa.
